SEPT 2007
Kulture Klub is proud to collaborate on the upcoming exhibit “I Couldn’t Live at Home” Exhibit and Performance Series at Minneapolis Central Library. Youth from KKC will exhibit paintings, photography, kinetic sculptures, banners, and traditional native talking feathers.
Opens Oct 6 to Examine Community Responses to Youth in Crisis. The Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest (JHSUM) and the Minneapolis Public Library’s collaborative exhibit and performance series, “I Couldn’t Live At Home,” opens Oct 6 at the Minneapolis Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall.
An initiative of the JHSUM’s Sheltering Home Chronicles, this unprecedented multi-media and interactive program includes more than 100 community and artistic partners coming together to present the images and voices of Minnesota’s young people “who can not live at home” in historical, artistic and present day contexts.
The series features four variety show-style performances curated by Shá Cage (poet, community organizer, and co-founder, MN Spoken Word Association, Mama Mosaic Theater, and Trú Rúts/Speakeasy Records) and Michelle Kinney (composer, musician and co-founder of Sugarfoot Music). Artists representing diverse communities will present compelling personal statements about away-from-home childhoods through dance, spoken word, music, theater, film and new media. All performances will be held at Minneapolis Central Library’s Pohlad Hall.
Opening performance: “Tasted
Textures of Home”
Saturday, Oct 6, 3-5pm
Host and curator: Shá Cage
Performers:
Bobby Wilson (Native Spoken Word artist)
F.I.R.E. (Young Hmong Artist Collective)
MaMa mOsAiC Theater For Women featuring Katie Leo (Performance Art)
Healing Spirit Drumming Circle
Dark n Lovely (Poetic Soul Band)
MN Spoken Word Association's 'Youth Liberation Poets'
And other special guests
The opening performance also features a Paper Wall Quilt upon which the community
is invited to post quotes, comments, names, and reflections relating to children
who cannot live at home and the families and communities who claim them.
Three additional performances featuring diverse Minnesota talent, including the Stuart Pimsler Dance Theater and Adam Levy of the Honeydogs, will be held Oct18, 6:30-8:30pm; Nov 10, 3-5pm; and Dec 13, 6:30-8:30pm.
The Sheltering Home Chronicles takes a North Minneapolis location—the former Jewish Sheltering Home for Children and current day Avenues for Homeless Youth—and creates art inspired by almost a century of stories belonging to young residents, their families, caregivers and communities. Noted photographer Wing Young Huie and the Minnesota Spoken Word Association (MNSWA) facilitated the project’s photography and written and oral storytelling components.
The exhibit runs Oct 6-Dec 29, 2007, at the library’s Cargill Hall, Tuesdays through Saturdays during library hours. The gallery will showcase narrative art by former Jewish Sheltering Home residents, poetry by fourth graders at the WISE Charter School in North Minneapolis, photography by Huie and eclectic art expressions by homeless and precariously housed young artists from Juxtapositions Arts, Kulture Klub, the Center for Hmong Art and Talent, the Garage, First Nations Orphans Association, South St. Paul High School, I Love a Parade and other community arts organizations.
A digital recording booth provided by the Minnesota History Center will invite gallery-goers to contribute their own stories to the growing dialogue about the experiences and possibilities of away-from-home children and their families.
The Sheltering Home Chronicles
received assistance from Rimon: The Minnesota Jewish Arts Council, an initiative
of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, and from the Willis C. Helm Family Fund

StreetWorks is a collaborative effort among 13 youth-serving agencies that offer an array of housing options and services, including emergency shelter, transitional housing, drop-in centers, meal sites, clothing, HIV/STD prevention, medical care, mental health counseling, alcohol and chemical dependency treatment, employment opportunities, educational programs, and life skills programs.
StreetWorks identifies homeless youth on the streets of the Twin Cities through its 33 outreach workers who canvass the streets from 2:00 p.m. to midnight every day. Because member agencies have pledged to provide easy access to their programs, outreach workers can immediately connect homeless youth with a continuum of services while building trusting relationships with these individuals that may last for years.
Kulture Klub youth participant Guy Stridsigne will be exhibiting photography as part of the Outsiders and Others Homeless Awareness Art Show at the Mall Of America.
The Outsider Art Center will present the first Homeless Awareness Art Show for 7 weeks beginning November 12, 2005 with special events to highlight National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week (November 13 -19.) A TWIN CITIES PUBLIC ART PROJECT
"Migrations"
is a public art project created by Kulture Klub, an independent nonprofit
arts organization that brings together artists and homeless teens. The youth
of Kulture
Klub (more info below) have created pocket sized sculptures, "self-portraits"
as representations of themselves. Designed to become small icons or markers
to be found by the public, these objects have been distributed throughout
the Twin Cities in locations that the youth frequent. Like Hansel and Gretel
distribution of breadcrumbs to find their way home, these sculptures have
been distributed throughout our community as symbols demonstrating an intricate
web of organization, communication and re-defined community that help the
youth survive. A result of an artist residency with sculpture Suzy
Greenberg, a simple process of silicone casting allowed these miniature
artworks to be duplicated to reach a total of 660 pieces, reflecting the estimated
number of homeless/unaccompanied youth 17 and under in the Twin Cities every
night in 2003*. Each piece has been marked to lead the audience to www.kultureklub.org
where they can learn more about this project and issues of homelessness in
the twin cities metro area. Additionally, the sites of distribution have been
marked on a map at YouthLink/Project OffStreets, tracking the scope of this
citywide project. The goals of this project are to; further public awareness
of homeless issues and the homeless youth population in Minnesota, and to
provide an opportunity for homeless youth to publicly present their artistic
expressions.
ABOUT KULTURE KLUB
Kulture Klub Collaborative
is an independent nonprofit arts organization that brings together artists
and homeless teens at YouthLink/Project
OffStreets, a crisis drop-in
center located in downtown Minneapolis. Through artist led workshops, open
mics, cultural presentations, and "art views," homeless teens develop
their creative expression, receive exposure to artistic excellence, and enter
into a group of peers, supportive adults, and diverse social communities.
Kulture Klub is a bridge for homeless youth to move from isolation to expression,
and for artists to creatively affect community.
There is a place for all who want to participate in Kulture Klub, regardless of ability and/or experience. We create the programming to appeal to a wide range of interests and skills among the youth and provide exposure to the broad diversity present in the Twin Cities arts community. Kulture Klub Collaborative partners homeless youth with artists, arts and cultural practice, creatively impacting community.
Kulture Klub Collaborative
is made possible by support from the McKnight
Foundation, the St. Paul Companies Inc., Target, Marshall Field's, Mervyn's
with support from the Target Foundation, the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council
through and appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature, the COMPAS Community
Art Program through a grant from the McKnight Foundation, the COMPAS 3M Award,
Moxie Salon, The Garage, YouthLink/Project OffStreets, and various community
partners and individuals.
