HOME IS WHERE YOU
MAKE IT:
(August 17, 2009) Kulture Klub Collaborative presents Home Is Where You Make
It, a series of six temporary sculptures produced by youth experiencing homelessness
with photographer Lauri Lyons and spoken word artist Tish Jones.
Kulture Klub invited Lyons and Jones to work with youth to write personal
narratives and shoot black and white photographs exploring personal definitions
and ideas of “home.” These sculptures are intended to promote
public awareness and recognition of the experiences of the homeless youth
population in the Twin Cities, as well as provide an opportunity for homeless
youth to create and display their artistic expressions to a broad audience.
The structures challenge common perceptions of the homeless population and
literally bring a face to the issues they encounter daily. The house structures
were designed by Megan Madland.
Six ‘houses’ will be installed at various locations across the
Twin Cities. In addition, a companion book will accompany the project, featuring
the portraits and handwritten texts of each teen discussing their interpretation
of the term ‘home’ as well as their experiences being homeless.
Fifty books will be printed, distributed to participants, and available for
purchase online.
