OF “THE EXONERATED” FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY!
—The
First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis has joined with Frank Theatre to present
a one night only reading of THE EXONERATED by Jessica Blank and Eric Jensen
as a benefit for Oasis Crisis Intervention Center and Kulture Klub Collaborative
on September 9, 2006. THE EXONERATED will be performed at The First Unitarian
Society, 900 Mount Curve, Mpls. at 7:30 p.m. on September 9, 2006. There is
a pre-show reception at 6:30, and post-show refreshments from 9:30-10:30 with
the opportunity to meet the actors and the staffs of Oasis and Kulture Klub.
There
is a suggested donation of $200 at the Community Hero level, $50 at the Activist
level, $25 for Supporter and $20 for Student. For reservations and information,
please call Carol Koepp at 952-893-2383
Culled
from interviews, letters, transcripts, case files, and the public record,
THE EXONERATED tells the true stories of six people who spent from 2-22 years
on Death Row for crimes they did not commit. Moving between first-person monologues
and scenes set in courtrooms and prisons, the interwoven stories paint a picture
of an American criminal justice system gone horribly wrong and of six brave
souls who persevered to survive it. "I'm no different from you,"
one character says. "I wasn't a street thug, I wasn't trash, I came from
a good family, if it happened to me, man, it can happen to anyone." That
man, Kerry Max Cook, spent 22 years on death row.
THE
EXONERATED will feature prominent Twin Cities’ actors Maria Asp, Carlyle
Brown, John Bueche, Virginia Burke, Sha Cage, Emil Herrera, Gary Keast, Grant
Richey, Andre Samples and Tom Sherohman. The reading is directed by Frank
Theatre Artistic Director Wendy Knox.
The
event will benefit Oasis Crisis Intervention Center and Kulture Klub Collaborative.
Oasis, located in North Minneapolis, is dedicated to bridging the gap between
the faith community and community systems such as courts, schools, child protection,
and law enforcement on behalf of families in crisis. Kulture Klub Collaborative,
housed in a drop-in center in downtown Minneapolis, partners homeless youth
with artists, arts & cultural practices, to creatively impact community.
FRANK
THEATRE is a professional theatre company committed to producing unique work
that stretches the skills of the artists who create the work while simultaneously
challenging the everyday perceptions of the audience through the exploration
of ideas and issues of social, political and/or cultural concern. THE FIRST
UNITARIAN SOCIETY is an ethical and liberal religious community dedicated
to promoting the ongoing search for truth and to affirming the inherent worth
of the individual.
In
spring of 2002, THE EXONERATED was first performed at the Los Angeles Actors'
Gang Theater under the Artistic Direction of Tim Robbins, followed by an Off-Broadway
production (over 600 performances) and then toured for 27 weeks across the
country. THE EXONERATED has also been performed at the United Nations and
for Washington audiences including Senator Patrick Leahy, Former Atty. General
Janet Reno, Former U.S. Atty. Mary Jo White, Supreme Court Justice David Souter,
and several members of the Justice Department.
